Return to Oaxaca

Just like in Rome the thing with that fountain, Oaxaca also has its own legend: anyone eating from the fried, hot grasshoppers available at the central market is sure to return in the future. Well, we sure have returned, and our friends, who are here for the first time will return. Oaxaca has not changed much since last year, the market is busy, Monte Alban silently withstands the decades, and since the Day of the Dead, aka Dia de Muertos is coming soon, there are skulls, skeletons and Halloween lanterns presenting the mix of ancient Maya, traditional Catholic and present-day American culture. The streets are still full of tourists, the prices of hostels are still high and the stone and concrete still radiates extreme heat. Apart from the market and the mildly interesting ruins, Oaxaca is better suited for a weekend class excursion than a serious cultural experience.
